A Beautiful FARM Morning – if you read our newsletters including the introductory newsletters that are sent when you subscribe then you know I have done a lot of different jobs in my lifetime - before farming.
Examples include installing community water & gas lines for business and residential, sitting at a desk with a computer managing inventory, etc., flying all over the world for business, and of course my military career.
I would NOT trade FARMING for any other job! Never would I go back to business dress (and daily shaves), nor do I miss the commutes back & forth, the never ending deadlines, office drama/ politics, owners selling their business which disrupts everyone's life as well as the downsizing/ rightsizing/ or whatever they call it these days.
Nor would I farm commodities that are only sold to big business that control my price. Commodities that fuel the processed food industry giants!!
This is a picture of one of our turkey flocks taken early one morning. When we walk up to the fence greeting them they will stroll over as to say good morning. Nope, you cannot enjoy a morning like this in a commute with the hussle and bussle getting to work on time. And our animals don't argue, gossip (at least that we know about), or create conflict to deal with.
Yep! I will take my farm life any day.
So, why don't more folks want to own a direct market farm? Your success is based on your talents, desires, and work... not a business that may or may not value your skills. And, unlike commodity farmers, direct market farms cut out the middle man (those big business that set prices to their favor) so the owners can make a decent living wage.
And, a big advantage direct market farmers have is communication with their customers who buy their products. Opposite of the commodity farmer who never knows who their customer is. Current trend suggest market share for direct market farmers will only grow as more people want to know their farmer.
Duplicate (verb) means to make or be an exact copy of. Our intent is not to grow beyond a 100 mile radius of our farm which will probably shrink as new farmers are able to service our customers. Currently, we have two guys that are basically paid interns who are learning, making mistakes now, so they can duplicate our success on their own farm one day. We are rooting for their success.
SilvoPasture - Our Next BIG Project - So, what is Silvopasture you ask? Well, it is the intentional integration of trees, domesticated animals, and forages managed together as a single multilayered production system.
We have pasture with little to no trees that is very hard on the animals especially during our intense summers. There are also a lot of very old hardwood trees that are dying off and need to be replaced. So, shade is our first consideration. Once we started learning about Silvopasture systems and trees that can be used we found a source of nutrition for our livestock that trees can provide.
Our plan is to plant six species, two of each specie per acre (for a total of 12/acre). Species include River Burch, Chestnut, Honey Locust #1, Honey Locust #2, Mulberry, and Hybrid Popular. Did you know that a mature Honey Locust tree will drop over 300# of pods that are 19-20% protein each year? And, Chestnuts sell for more than pecans?
Trees have been ordered. A team has been secured for planting - they say it will take about 2 days to plant the 1800 trees! Target date is mid to late December.
WOW! Like they say, the best time to plant a tree was 5 years ago. The next best time is now.
Nature's Gourmet Farm product value proposition is to create a community that evolves around one of the most intrinsically important things of the ages, and that’s the provision of sustenance. That's our passion - to raise healthy animals to provide high quality protein and saturated fat that nourish families and strengthen immune systems.
Our Beef is always grass finished with NO grains. Additionally, our animals are free of mRNA, GMO's (chemicals), Antibiotics, and Hormones. We ethically raise them on diverse forage pastures that regenerates our soils and protects our ecosystem.
Let me encourage you to "Be The Change" our food system needs by "Voting With Your Fork" at every meal.
